Goa Carbon Sink Tracker

Monitoring changes in carbon sinks is essential for assessing their contribution to greenhouse gas mitigation, supporting sustainable land management, and informing evidence-based climate policy.

The Goa Carbon Sink Tracker presents annual estimates of carbon sequestration across an 18-year period (2005–2022). The estimates are derived from Global Land Cover (GLC) datasets processed using Google Earth Engine with a resolution of 30 meters. Carbon sequestration is estimated for the Forest Land and Wetlands land-use categories following the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (Volume 4: Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU)) using Tier 1 methodology.

The tracker provides an interactive map, time-series visualisations, and analytical insights to explore changes in carbon sequestration across Goa. It also includes a Land Use Land Cover (LULC) layer, enabling users to visualise the spatial distribution and changes in land-use and land-cover categories from 2005 to 2022.

This data feeds into Climate Dot's Goa Emission Inventory, which is an attempt at developing a comprehensive greenhouse gas emissions inventory for Goa. Explore the Goa Emission Inventory here.
